I have found a couple of links to some videos, which are very interesting as they not only have a similar idea to me, but also they have created a concept video. I think I plan to combine 3ds Max and After Effects to create the final concept design, but this is subject to change at this stage.

This one is different to the portfolio idea, but one which has potential and I may look into this more.
